About the fishery

Loch Awe offers wild trout, ferox and pike fishing in Argyll under the Loch Awe Improvement Association permit system. Permitted areas, seasons and tackle rules vary by species. Excluded shores and the separate Kilchurn pike-permit area must be checked before choosing where to fish.

One large loch with permit exclusions

  • This listing covers Loch Awe in Argyll, with fishing under Loch Awe Improvement Association permits subject to excluded shores. Loch Avich, the River Avich and other nearby fisheries are not additional waters within this listing.
  • The location pin marks the loch, not an entrance, car park or a bank where fishing is automatically allowed.

Wild trout, ferox and coarse fish

  • The association describes wild brown trout, ferox trout, Arctic charr and pike. Follow the appropriate trout or pike/coarse permit and species-specific rules.
  • No salmon or sea-trout permission is supplied by the LAIA permit.

Permits, excluded shores and camping

  • Buy the correct dated permit through the association's online booking links. Under-12s fish free when accompanied by a permit-holding adult; other concessionary reductions have been removed.
  • Red shorelines on the association's map are excluded from LAIA permits and require the relevant landowner's written consent. Pike fishing near Kilchurn Castle requires a separate Kilchurn Pike Fishing permit.
  • A fishing permit does not grant camping permission. The rules require landowner consent for camping; the permit page also requires a three-day permit for anglers intending to camp overnight.

Fishing access and booking

LAIA permit fishing on Loch Awe subject to excluded shores, species seasons and method rules. Kilchurn pike fishing requires a separate permit. Camping requires landowner consent.

Tickets and prices

Published permit prices

  • The permit page, updated 9 May 2026, lists trout and pike/coarse permits at £10 for one day, £20 for three days and £30 for a week. An annual permit is £90.
  • Day permits run midnight to midnight on the selected date. Confirm the permit product, permitted area and current price before purchase; an LAIA permit bought for the excluded Kilchurn area is not refundable.

Opening times and seasons

Species seasons and permit validity

  • Trout and coarse fish other than pike: 15 March–6 October. Pike: all year, subject to the winter method restrictions.
  • The permit's midnight-to-midnight validity is not a promise of unrestricted entry, parking, camping or access to every shore. No separate gate-opening timetable is confirmed.

Fishing rules

Trout and pike tackle rules

  • Brown trout below 10 inches (25cm) or above 14 inches (36cm) must be released; the daily brown-trout bag limit is four. The rules require rainbow trout to be removed and other fish released.
  • Trout fishing: one rod except when trolling from a boat, no keepnets, knotless landing nets, no groundbaiting, and no live fish or other vertebrate bait.
  • Coarse-permit fish must be returned unharmed. Pike tackle requires a 30lb wire trace with at least 20lb monofilament or 50lb braid; use suitable unhooking tools and a mat. No more than three rods, never unattended.
  • Only pike may be targeted outside the trout season. Trolling is prohibited 7 October–14 March, as are baits/lures likely to catch trout, including pike flies under five inches.
  • No fires, tree felling or litter. Observe marked exclusion zones and the full current association rules.

Facilities and accessibility

Access facilities and planning

  • The association's map identifies shores, exclusion zones and local amenities. It does not establish a public car park, toilet, wheelchair route or accessible fishing peg at the generic loch pin.
  • Choose a permitted fishing area before travel and check local arrival, parking and access arrangements. The association's office address is a contact location, not a general fishing entrance.
